Sustainability at Mantra Collins

Here at Mantra Collins Hobart we are committed to embedding sustainability into every facet of our daily operations. We recognise that sustainability is an ongoing journey and are continually striving to reduce our carbon footprint wherever possible. Below are some of the initiatives we have implemented to date.

Dry Amenities

We are delighted to share our ongoing commitment to reducing single-use plastics in our guest rooms. As part of this initiative, we have made a significant decision to eliminate single-use dry amenities, taking a bold step towards a plastic-free environment.

We understand the importance of preserving our planet for future generations. By removing single-use plastic amenities such as toothbrushes, combs, and shower caps from our guest rooms, we are significantly reducing our environmental footprint. Instead, guests can request dry amenities by calling room service or visiting our friendly team at reception.

Large Amenities

As part of our ongoing efforts, we have made the proactive decision to move to large format amenities, replacing our single-use plastic common amenities with eco-friendly pump dispensers throughout the hotel. By eliminating single-use plastic bottles, we are significantly reducing the amount of waste generated by our operations. This commitment aligns with our dedication to environmental stewardship and reflects our ongoing efforts to improve sustainability in all aspects of our hotel.

Food Waste

At Mantra Collins Hobart, we are committed to reducing food wastage and promoting sustainable practices across our food and beverage outlets and conferencing department. We understand the importance of minimising our environmental impact while delivering exceptional culinary experiences to our guests.

  • Waste Reduction - Our waste reduction plan revolves around utilising food items that adhere to HACCP safety standards. Instead of disposing of these items, we integrate them into other dishes whenever possible. This approach not only minimizes waste but also enables us to offer creative and sustainable menu choices for our customers.

  • Enforcing FIFO Protocols: In our café, we strictly follow FIFO (First In, First Out) protocols to ensure proper stock rotation and prevent spoilage. By giving priority to ingredients based on their arrival date, we guarantee that older items are used before newer ones, thus reducing the risk of food wastage. This careful approach enables us to preserve the freshness and quality of our ingredients while minimizing unnecessary waste.

  • Operating with seasonal menus encompassing vegetarian options with produce from local suppliers we eliminate as much as possible our carbon footprint, whilst at the same time supporting local businesses and our community.

Recycling

At Mantra Collins Hobart, all hotel waste is separated into co-mingle, cardboard, food waste and general waste, minimising our impact on landfill.  In addition, we have taken a number of steps to further reduce water and embrace a circular system.

  • In our ongoing commitment to recycling, we have collaborated with JJ Recycling waste, a prominent recycling organization in Tasmania. This collaboration enables us to recycle materials from our housekeeping and food and beverage departments, effectively diverting them from landfills and promoting a circular economy.  In addition, our nearby supplier, Hobart Print Cartridges, responsibly collects used printer cartridges and ensures their safe disposal.

  • To optimise our waste management procedures, we have introduced a weekly bin collection system. Our dedicated team ensures the smooth exchange of bins, providing clean replacements to facilitate the recycling process. These efforts not only contribute to waste reduction but also elevate the eco-friendliness and convenience of our guests' experience.

Community Support

We are committed to maintaining strong connections with our local community and partner with the below organisations to give back wherever possible.

  • Ronald McDonald House Charities – Giving seriously ill and injured children the best gift of all – their families.
  • Salvation Army – When you feel all hope is lost, you can give a new beginning.
